SESSION 01 / 20 Foundation Phase 1

GIMP 3.2 Orientation

A misconfigured workspace costs you time on every future session. We fix the interface, preferences, and toolbox layout first โ€” then you'll be working with GIMP, not against it.

Concept Brief โ€” Why Orientation Matters
โ–ผ

GIMP 3.2 introduced significant changes from GIMP 2.10: a reworked layer effects system, improved GEGL color pipeline, and a redesigned single-window mode. Most frustration beginners experience comes not from GIMP's complexity โ€” but from fighting default settings that aren't optimised for learning or productivity.

By the end of this session you'll have a consistent workspace that matches all future screenshots and instructions in this course. That consistency is the real goal โ€” it removes a variable that would otherwise create confusion in every session that follows.

Skill unlock: After this session you'll be able to identify every major panel by name, navigate between tools without hunting, and open any image without a dialog warning about colour profiles.

  • 01
    Enable Single-Window Mode

By default GIMP may open in multi-window mode. Switch to single-window for a focused, consistent layout.

  • 02
Set the Theme and Icon Size

Switch to a dark theme for reduced eye strain and set icons to a comfortable size. In Preferences, navigate to Interface โ†’ Theme and select "Dark". Under Icon Theme, choose "Symbolic" for clean, scalable icons.

    Edit โ†’ Preferences โ†’ Interface โ†’ Theme
  • 03
    Configure the Toolbox

Right-click on the toolbox area to customise which tools appear. Remove rarely-used tools to reduce clutter. The 12 tools we'll use in this course are: Move, Scale, Rectangle Select, Ellipse Select, Free Select, Fuzzy Select, Paths, Clone, Heal, Dodge/Burn, Curves (via Colors menu), and the Text tool.

  • 04
    Dock the Layers Panel Permanently

The Layers panel must always be visible. If it isn't docked on the right side, go to Windows โ†’ Dockable Dialogs โ†’ Layers, then drag the tab to dock it below the Tool Options panel on the right.

  • 05
    Set Default Image Resolution

Prevent the "image will print at X inches" confusion. Set your default resolution based on your typical use: 72 PPI for screen work, 300 PPI for print. You can always change it per-project โ€” this is just the starting point.

Edit โ†’ Preferences โ†’ Default Image โ†’ Resolution
  • 06
    Fix Colour Profile Warnings

GIMP 3.2 uses GEGL and babl for its colour pipeline. When opening JPEGs with embedded profiles, you'll be asked to convert. Set the default to "Convert to built-in sRGB" to keep behaviour consistent across sessions.

  • 07
    Enable "Use Pointer Acceleration" Off

For precision painting and retouching, pointer acceleration can cause inconsistent brush strokes. Turn it off in Input Devices preferences for tablet users.

Edit โ†’ Preferences โ†’ Input Devices โ†’ Additional Input Controllers
  • 08
    Save Preferences and Restart

Click OK to apply all preferences. Quit GIMP completely and relaunch to ensure all settings are loaded from the new configuration file.

GIMP 3.2 note: The Preferences dialog was reorganised in 3.0. If you find an option isn't where the path says, use Edit โ†’ Preferences and search using Ctrl+F within the dialog.

Open any JPEG image and perform each of the following without looking at a menu โ€” test whether the workspace is now intuitive. Aim to complete all steps within 10 minutes.

  • A
    Open an Image

Use File โ†’ Open to open any JPEG from your computer. Confirm that the colour profile dialog no longer appears (if it does, revisit Step 6 above).

  • B
    Identify Every Panel

Name each visible panel out loud: Toolbox (top-left), Tool Options (below toolbox), Layers (right), Channels, Paths. If any panel is missing, dock it via Windows โ†’ Dockable Dialogs.

  • C
    Zoom In and Out

Use the keyboard shortcuts: + to zoom in, - to zoom out, Shift+Ctrl+E (or Shift+Cmd+E on Mac) to fit the image to the window. Practice until it's fluid.

  • D
    Check Image Properties

Open Image โ†’ Canvas Size and note the dimensions and resolution. Open Image โ†’ Color Profile to confirm it shows sRGB. These two checks are part of every professional's opening workflow.

No step-by-step guidance for this one. Use what you've learned to complete the following:

  • โ†’
Rearrange the dockable panels into a layout you prefer

Try adding the Histogram dialog (Windows โ†’ Dockable Dialogs โ†’ Histogram) and docking it somewhere useful. The Histogram will be your constant companion from Session 7 onwards.

  • โ†’
Explore Windows โ†’ Save Current Window Setup as Default

Once your layout feels right, save it. This is GIMP's way of preserving the arrangement across restarts.

๐Ÿ’ก

Hint: If you get stuck, look under the Windows menu โ€” almost every dockable dialog and layout option lives there.

Session 1 Review

15:00 review
Key Concepts
  • Single-window mode consolidates all panels into one window
  • GIMP 3.2 uses GEGL โ€” a different colour engine to GIMP 2.10
  • Preferences are stored per-user, not per-project
  • The Layers panel must always be docked and visible
  • sRGB is the correct working colour space for screen output
Common Mistakes
  • Forgetting to restart GIMP after changing preferences
  • Leaving colour profile conversion set to "Ask each time" โ€” causes repetitive dialogs
  • Working in multi-window mode โ€” panels get lost behind other windows
  • Not saving the window layout after customising it
Quick Quiz
  • What menu enables Single-Window Mode?
  • Where do you save the window layout permanently?
  • What colour profile should GIMP auto-convert imported images to?
  • Which keyboard shortcut fits the image to the canvas window?
Next Session Preview
  • Session 2 introduces the Layer System โ€” GIMP's single most important concept
  • You'll create, duplicate, group, and reorder layers
  • Prerequisite: your Layers panel must be docked and visible (set up today)
  • Have any image file ready to open at the start of Session 2
